Jane Jin Kaisen
Jane Jin Kaisen is a visual artist and filmmaker. In her research-based art projects that take the form of film, video installation, performance and writing, she explores ways of addressing and giving shape to silenced histories, fractured memories and embodied experiences of difference.
Projects include Dissident Translations and Reiterations of Dissent (2011-) concerning the legacies of the systematically suppressed Jeju April Third Uprising and Massacre in Korea – the narrative experimental film The Woman, The Orphan, and The Tiger (2010, made in collaboration with Guston Sondin-Kung) that explores how mechanisms of militarism, patriarchy, colonialism, and nationalism effected three generations of women in South Korea - and Tracing Trades (2006), a multi-media project that contextualizes transnational adoption from Korea to Scandinavia within the region´s repressed colonial past and orientalist imaginaries.
Since 2009, Kaisen has been part of the artist unit itinerant_sends_for_itinerant with Guston Sondin-Kung. Together they have organized a series of discursive events, most recently a one-year exhibition program titled Incisions. In 2004, she co-founded the artist collective UFOlab (Unidentified Foreign Object Laboratory).
Jane Jin Kaisen holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio Art from the University of California Los Angeles (2010), an MA in Art Theory from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2010), and she was a studio fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York (2007-08).
